I had to get the girls and myself up, fed, dressed and out the door for an appointment at the courthouse by 8:30 this morning. I feel as though appointments that early shouldn't exist for someone with kids, especially appointments that happen right after vacation. I seem to be on a slower more tired pace this week. Anyway, during my drive, I said a little prayer for there to be a close parking spot so I wouldn't have to haul the girls all around downtown. There it was, the perfect front row spot waiting for me. I loaded the girls into the stroller and headed to the front door of the courthouse. The only two doors I knew about had many steps leading up, which meant now I have a dilemma- do I attempt by myself to get a double stroller up the stairs or wander around the massive building looking for a wheelchair accessible door? I went with attempting to get the stroller up the many steps. Fortunately, a man came running up to help me! As we finished the many stairs, I thanked him and then the security guard mentioned, "Hey, let me show you where the handicap accessible entrance is located so you don't have to go up the stairs again." The lady nearby also applauded me for getting two kids out the door this early.
Meanwhile, as I waited for our appointment big sister made friends with another lady waiting. She stuck near her the entire time. Little sister didn't want to wait anymore and decided it was time to sleep. The lady doing the appointment was helping me wrangle big sis while I held a sleeping baby- she even wiped her runny nose- and then she said,
"It takes a community to raise kids."
What truth. I'm so thankful for this lady who was a stranger just moments ago living out this truth. I'm thankful for the man at the stairwell who was willing to end his phone call to help me carry the stroller up the stairs. I'm thankful for the security guard offering an alternative solution for the next time. I'm thankful for the woman standing nearby offering her words of encouragement. I'm thankful for the lady in the waiting area who entertained my toddler. I'm thankful for the handicapped accessible exit that was near my car. Also, I'm really thankful for my community.
